A long time ago, I realized that Americans no longer shared the same idea of justice. Those different conceptions made agreement on the regime’s most basic things increasingly impossible. Our daily political and cultural disagreements would, inevitably, break down along these lines, and we’d have very little to say to one another before throwing punches. Seeing this divide, many conservatives reasonably prioritized dialogue with the left. It ended up becoming an end in itself—while discussions between conservatives have been limited to either bitching about the left’s latest predations or tired, utterly futile ideas about winning elections and then restoring the vision of America’s Founders. I hope this community will become a forum for discussion about how we can move peaceably forward.

At the same time, though, a life limited to politics and bad news isn’t worth living. There is much else, and our hobbies allow us to snap out of the current year and into a different, more optimistic space. We’ll do plenty of that, too.
